Colitis in dogs

My dog had an episode of colitis when he was 8 months old. We took treatment and it went away. Now he is having another episode after 6 months. He is on fresh species appropriate diet. His poop is not good. We had to take him out several times during day and night cos is his upset stomach. Today as early as 3:00 am in the morning. How can we help him? Has anyone any experience with colitis in dogs? We add the necessary probiotic…we gave him a bland diet as well. P.S: we are consulting our vet but I wanna look at a holistic treatment plan. Please help

Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system starts attacking the body.

It creates a lot of inflammation with ulcers in the colon and rectum. Dogs may show symptoms of bloating or diarrhoea.

Medically there are two solutions:

  1. Surgery
  2. Steroids

Both of these solutions are not permanent solutions and create many problems in the body.

Surgery is not a good option because the colon is responsible for absorbing water and electrolyte, the dog will get dehydrated and the lack of absorption of electrolytes will create heart problems and many skin issues.

Steroids are also not good options because of the side effects, the need for steroids will keep on increasing and it creates havoc in the body.

So, now let’s talk about the holistic approach:

The holistic approach means giving a chance to the body to heal itself.

How can we do that?

Fasting

Fasting is a proven way of accelerating the healing process, it triggers the autophagy process and the scientist who submitted the research on this won the Nobel prize in 2016, his name is Yoshinori Ohsumi.

If you are feeding your dog multiple times a day, food or treats then you are giving very less chance for the healing process to get triggered.

Full day fasting or intermittent fasting can help in the healing.

Zinc Supplement

Zinc lowers the risk of any ulcers, if the dog is lacking zinc then the chances of getting ulcers increase.

Vitamin D

More sun time, it activates the immune system and acts as the steroids vets suggest but minus the side effects.

Cabbage

It has phytonutrients that help in the healing, but cabbage can create an upset stomach in some dogs, so start small, you can juice it freshly and mix a little bit with the food.

Probiotics

Start small with this, and increase gradually because probiotic impacts the immune system and it can make the immune system more unstable.

Wheat Grass

It tunes down the inflammation going on inside the body.

This is a reversible condition but the dog should practice fasting, full-day or intermittent.

Thank you so much. We are fasting him today. I will follow the guidelines mentioned by you. Thanks a ton. So glad to know that it is reversible :innocent:
