Mother Association - Dog Psychology Concept

There are a lot of things that you need to take into account when you want to have a close relationship with your dog. One of the most important things is understanding how mother association works.

So what is mother association?

Puppies have only their nose open when they are born, after 15 days they open their eyes and then in 20 days they have their ears working.

This is the time when they are most impressionable and open to learning. Anything that puppy experiences during this time will have a huge impact on their adult life. This is why it is so important for puppies to have a good experience with their mother during this time.

If a puppy has a good experience with their mother, they will learn to trust and bond with her. They will learn that she is a safe and reliable source of food, comfort, and security. This will give them a strong foundation for trusting and bonding with people later in life.

So for the first 15 days when the puppies have just their noses open, they figure out everything through smelling, everything around is just a scent for them including their mother.

The association with their mother starts with their nose, then eyes and then ears.

Every association that happens in this particular order of nose, eyes and ears, from the dog psychology perspective, we call it The Mother Association.

You can use the same understanding and start creating this association with dogs in day to day life, for example when you meet your dog or any dog, please practice no touch no talk no eye contact, this way you allow the dog to meet you using the nose.

Most people with dogs create a lot of excitement and it is the opposite of mother association, you are making a lot of sounds triggering the ears of the dog, then you give direct eye contact, in this whole process dog gets excited and never get to use his natural order of figuring out the situation.

One of the most important things to understand when you want to have a close relationship with your dog is the mother association. If you can create an association between yourself and your dog using the same order (nose, eyes, ears), you will be able to create a strong bond with your dog that will last a lifetime.
